The Reasons the Duke of York Has Surrendered His Official Titles – and What It Means for the Royal Family
In a statement issued by Buckingham Palace, the king's brother has declared he is giving up his royal titles, including his dukedom. Here is an overview of what has been revealed – and what wasn't.
What Did Andrew Said?
After previously stepped down as a active member of the monarchy in 2019, Andrew has currently chosen to “take additional measures” and consent not to use the “honor or the awards which have been granted to” him.
But he also employed the announcement to emphatically rejecting – consistent with his past statements – the accusations of sexual impropriety made against him; even though having paid out a substantial sum to settle the legal claim filed by Virginia Giuffre – a settlement in which he accepted no fault and strongly rejected any claims of wrongdoing.

Why Hasn’t He Been Officially Stripped of All of His Titles?
To revoke a ducal title would require legislative action, and would constitute an unprecedented step publicly before the nation – it has not happened to a senior royal in over a century – that it could result in further reputational damage for the monarchy.
Andrew is also a royal by birth. When he was born in 1960, he became as the child of the sovereign. This could only be changed if a letters patent was enacted by the reigning monarch.

Furthermore, the sovereign is due to undertake a significant trip to meet Pope Leo soon, during which he will be the initial British king after Henry the Eighth broke from the Catholic Church in 1534 to pray publicly with the pope and leader of Catholicism. He would not desire that visit to be overshadowed by more negative headlines about his brother.
What Has Been the Reaction?
Although he stated Giuffre had been “vindicated” by the decision, her sibling Sky Roberts informed a newspaper that Andrew’s honorary prince title ought to be removed for “true justice” to be achieved.
The anti-monarchist advocacy organization Republic has also said the move is “insufficient and delayed”, adding: “Andrew remains facing allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of office. He ought to be stripped of every honor and his navy rank and should undergo a legal probe. Not using archaic honors is not a punishment that fits the offences.”
