New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near the famous arena and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a local hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He later played for the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
