Jailhouse Shock: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Time Behind Bars

He fought the legal system and the legal system triumphed.

Two months subsequent to receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for trying to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The convicted plotter – who has been under home confinement in his estate while a set of court processes and appeals proceed – is broadly anticipated to be incarcerated in the near future, during increasing speculation that he will be moved to a infamous maximum security prison.

Previous Statements on Convicts

During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the conservative former paratrooper exhibited little sympathy for the country's inmates.

“For what reason must we provide those lowlifes a easy time?” he once pondered. “They should just get screwed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro declared: “If you don’t want to end up in prison, you simply need is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Incarceration Facility Debate

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, four of whom this week inspected the complex in an obvious bid to prevent the supreme court from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, stated he expected the elderly leader to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and feared his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe intestinal problems – the consequence of a life-threatening assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – implied it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His condition is highly critical. He will not be able to handle it if they take him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about overcrowded cells and the condition of inmate food.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas recalled witnessing cells accommodating 40 prisoners: “That’s virtually one square meter per detainee.

“We talked to the inmates and they grumble, of course, of the terrible meals,” continued the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

Lucas is not the sole person expressing views prior to the former president’s anticipated imprisonment.

Penning in a major daily, another ally, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” public service and alleged Brazil was about to experience “the biggest unfairness in its record”.

“It is an injustice that erodes the hearts of countless people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Divided General Opinion

It is possibly true considering the significant support Bolsonaro maintains on the Brazilian right. Yet his predicted incarceration has also warmed the spirits of millions others who think he should be imprisoned for planning to stop the elected leader from assuming office – and even scheming to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the current administration's Workers’ party, said: “Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be sent in a hole. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to be placed in segregation. Nobody wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to obtain proper handling – but dignified handling in prison. He must not persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”

The congressman noted how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the tough conditions of convicts, had unexpectedly realized to their entitlements. “Recently has the far-right – which has consistently claimed that basic rights were not for criminals – chosen to visit a prison to discover what conditions are actually like,” he remarked.

“He is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “shameful, insulting treatment”.

Possible Incarceration Conditions

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which currently houses about fourteen thousand prisoners, his probable assigned facility looks to be a adjacent jail for law enforcement and other “unique” inmates called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

Its cells are much more pleasant than those in the larger jail, although still a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro enjoyed while living in the spectacular presidential palace, around a short distance away.

According to reports, the room Bolsonaro could expect to occupy in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – approximately the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 sq metre bathroom with a shower and a 12 sq metre balcony. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a set and additionally a minibar in his quarters as long as they were provided by his loved ones,” the report stated.

Partisan Responses

He criticized the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his outcome in the {
