Israelis commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian peace talks proceed
People have gathered throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-initiated offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The assault resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are seen as reliable by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a risk to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official commemorations until October 16th - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still were held throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israelis killed in the Hamas attack was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was televised across Israeli TV networks.
Hours earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official involved in the negotiations indicated that an evening round of mediated discussions commenced at evening in Egypt.
The representative said the morning session finished without tangible results, amid disagreements over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the negotiations are "tough and have still not produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are striving to narrow the differences between the two sides.
Critical Matters in Discussions
- A lasting halt to fighting
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The removal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war administration of the region
Civilian Reaction
In the city's memorial area earlier, young a woman - whose family member survived the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - shared: "Nowhere seems like home now and until each abducted person return none of us will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can breathe anew. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.
Outside the leader's home in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel says forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.
Demonstrator one woman explained: "We need do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population desire the hostilities to conclude in return for the liberation of the abducted.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, sector and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of that sector, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"As the dusk comes, the dread appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my little child who rests his head on me all night."
"Constantly we check the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."
