Widely circulated footage appeared to show Jones flashing his middle finger toward opposing supporters, though he maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an interaction with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
Historical Precedent for Owner Fines
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Previous cases include:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 penalty in 2009 for a similar offensive signal.
