Catherine's Yearly Christmas Musical Celebration Pays Tribute to Unsung Heroes
Her Royal Highness has organised her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with a congregation comprising members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The large audience will hear a selection of carols, music and readings from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
Focusing on Kindness and Compassion
The central message of the concert, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday, is kindness and showing love to others.
Among the guests will be Jonathan and Anna Cordiner, whose young girl was lost to a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a support fund, to aid parents with a terminally ill child.
"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often quietly and unspoken, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an profound impact to the circumstances of individuals," Her Royal Highness stated in a letter ahead of the carol service.
A Gradual Return
The royal has been undertaking her own gradual return to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, recently giving her first public speech for two years, in which she discussed recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".
Music and Opportunity
Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from young musicians supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, set up with the help of the former royal to increase availability of music lessons.
An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from southwest Wales, has been helped by the organisation, with funding assisting with equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "awesome" to be taking part in the evening's event.
"Pursuing music is often costly," she stated. She is now studying at the prestigious music academy, and added that "everyone should have the opportunity" to cultivate their performance abilities.
A Family Affair
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "I never imagined I would perform in front of so many important people," she said.
Attending the service will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, honouree of a youth community award, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to collect donations for community pantries.
Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment
The Abbey has been festooned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Among the musical performers will be singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a nautical singing ensemble, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."
This annual carol service will be broadcast on a major network on Christmas Eve.
